Abstract

Practicing and maintaining a 5S method in a workplace can be difficult, but if done properly, the benefits are numerous. The 5 S's are sort, set, shine, standardize, and sustain. Sort requires clearing a work area of unnecessary clutter, set is to set things in order or to streamline, shine means to keep things clean, standardize is a process of documenting and maintaining processes, and sustain is the act of keeping up with the other steps. Sometimes, sustain can be the most difficult step of the process, but without it, the 5S method does not work.
