Abstract
[This abstract is based on the author's abstract.] Lean production principles, tools, and techniques have been central to transforming Boeing's facilities in Wichita, KS, and St. Louis, MO. The Wichita division started in 1995 to build a foundation for JIT/Lean capabilities, emphasizing strategies of penetration, stabilization, and growth. The St. Louis division has focused since 1994 on coordinating with suppliers and helping them to appreciate their contribution to the Value Stream Map. The success of Boeing's efforts at the two facilities is demonstrated through vignettes spotlighting supply chain and manufacturing process improvements. Boeing's Lean experts now assist suppliers to develop and implement their own Lean strategies.
