Abstract
[This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]
Questions regarding implementation of ISO 14001 prompted NP Power, the electric power company of New Brunswick, Canada, to develop a framework to assess its compliance to the standards. A single power plant was used as a case study, and elements of existing environmental program requirements were reviewed to reveal actions necessary for ISO 14001 compliance. The company's environmental policies were reviewed, and actual and potential environmental impacts of plant activities were identified and ranked for significance. A comparison was made to other industries and legal requirements were considered. The results of the study indicated that NP Power should develop and maintain an official Environmental Management System to focus its resources on areas most in need of improvement. The study also recommended certain modifications in the company's environmental policy.
