Abstract

Traditional gage repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) studies are ANOVA methods widely used to analyze measurement systems. Application of a variation of this tool, the attribute gage R&R, can improve process yields and reduce costs. Unlike the variable gage study, the attribute gage study can be easily applied to transactional processes such as analysis of customer complaints and customer requirements. A case study illustrates how an electroplating company experiencing an unacceptable product rejection rate realized substantial savings by applying the attribute R&R gage during the measurement phase of a Black Belt project. Application of this simple form of attribute gage R&R revealed variation in inspection methods when inspection standards were not used. Continual document control for visual standards plus periodic training insured that visual inspection methods remain consistent.
