Abstract

[This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.]The application of failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) for software is discussed. Earlier research has attempted to define software FMEA (SWFMEA) concepts and use FMEA for improving quality and reliability of software products during design and manufacture, but its application to embedded software has not been reported. A case study in an Indian software company describes the development of a model for process SWFMEA applied to the coding phase of the offline review process of an embedded systems product. Defects are identified, and a risk priority number (RPN) value is calculated for current status using process SWFMEA. Revised RPN is also calculated after implementing recommended corrective actions. Implementation of the model resulted in significant improvement in the quality of the review process.
