Abstract

The Kaizen-Blitz method of rapid improvement is described. Kaizen-Blitz teams are a combination of lean production, continuous improvement and team problem solving. The term Kaizen has origins in Japan and means continuing improvement in personal life, social life, and working life. To be successful, Kaizen activities must involve top management, managers, and workers, and must be linked by a vision. Kaizen-Blitz activities begin by identifying expectations and concerns. Team members identify clearly defined boundaries describing the topic and area for improvement. The Kaizen-Blitz facilitator, who should have experience with managing projects, is responsible for creating and following the Kaizen-Blitz agenda, providing education and training for team members, removing obstacles encountered during the activity, and coaching team members. A typical Kaizen-Blitz may last anywhere from three to five days, depending upon the complexity of the work area and the topic. Kaizen-Blitz provides a real opportunity for continuous improvement by eliminating and reducing non-value added activities.
