Abstract

The continuous improvement tool 5S has a storied history and natural place in the life of an organizer, as evidenced by the accompanying adage, "a place for everything, and everything in its place." The need and impetus for using such a system starts anywhere an organizer is dissatisfied with the flow of the day. 5S—which stands for sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain—begins anytime a group of objects or other definable items comes under scrutiny for whatever reason short of actual use in their intended purposes. Maintaining a state of organization or level of excellence is where continuous improvement tools can shine.
