Abstract
Rather than viewing DoE and observational data as competing strategies, it is more advantageous to treat them as complementary tools that work more effectively in synergy: Using observational data to discover trends and the questions worth asking, and using DoE to provide causal validation and actionable answers. By developing strategies to assess the suitability of each method for different study goals, we can leverage existing data and complement it with intentionally, well-planned and executed experiments for driving better solutions.
