Abstract

The 2015 revision of quality management standard ISO 9001 represents its transition to being more of a business management system standard. Organization can no longer think of ISO 9001 as simply a means to control documents, product nonconformities, internal audits, and preventive and corrective actions. The revision of ISO 9001 focuses on an organization's leadership, planning, support, operations, performance evaluation, and improvement. Organizations that want to be engaged in the global marketplace must look at the standard as a business management system. This article focuses on the core principles in ISO 9001:2008 that the author sees as carrying over to ISO 9001:2015. One of the most powerful benefits of the standard is the principle of employing the process approach. Focusing on implementing a process approach will lead to a systematic method of identifying and controlling processes to ensure that requirements are understood and met in an effort to add value to an organization.
