Abstract

PRO-TEC Coating Co., having used the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria for continuous improvement since 2002, became the only company last year to receive the Baldrige award in the small business category. The company provides coated sheet metal, primarily to the automotive industry. PRO-TEC used three concepts to manage its business, products, and employees: ownership, responsibility, and accountability. The company used many best practices, including lean manufacturing and continuous improvement, and relied on a well-trained, self-directed workforce to achieve its goal of becoming an industry leader. PRO-TEC conducts its own customer satisfaction surveys to identify new concerns and opportunities. Organizational performance review results are used to evaluate and improve key processes, allowing senior leaders to reassess factors essential for setting the direction of the company.
