Abstract

Data quality is not often talked about, but a lack of data quality can lead to disastrous and sometimes even fatal consequences. In the legal field, chain of custody is crucial in proving that data or evidence has not been tainted or altered in any way. In the data world, this concept is also present and is referred to as data pedigree. Tracking the pedigree of a data set is vital to ensure that data is clean and correct. Data pedigree should include information about the source of the data, what knowledge the data represents, processes used to retrieve the data, just to name a few.
