Abstract

Sampling is a useful tool when inspecting products for defects. Samples are most effective at catching defects when they are representative, which is when all samples have an equal chance of being picked. However, sampling does not tell you where or when defects occur in the process, they only identify defects. In order to find and fix defects, other methods like statistical process control, control charts and control limits can be used. Using the right kind of sampling can aid in inspection activities, but should not be relied upon as the only means of fixing defects in a product.
