Abstract
Globalization and the evolution of quality management systems from a focus on controlling product conformity to a much broader focus on overall enterprise capability have resulted in the need to redefine the role of quality management in dealing with supplier relationships. Effective problem solving of supplier performance issues requires the cooperation of customers in the development of solutions that benefit both organizations. Operational due diligence provides technically proficient assistance and is more effective than aggressive monitoring and auditing. The role of the quality function, like that of quality management systems, has evolved to become enterprisewide, facilitating performance enhancement, effective decision making, and problem solving. With management's support, this approach can recreate the organization's culture around knowledge management and investment in future benefits. A sidebar article provides an introduction to the subject of effective supplie!r assessment.
