Abstract

A series of modules is the structure for implementing the ISO 9000 series. The standards provide an international baseline of quality that benefits customers and suppliers. Before implementing ISO 9000, the executive management of an organization should commit to the changes and responsibilities that it will entail. The implementation process consists of eight modules or steps. First, decide if ISO 9000 implementation is appropriate for the organization. If it is, then the second step is to select the ISO 9000 system most applicable to the organization. Third, perform a shortfall analysis that indicates how much the organization varies from ISO 9000 compliance. Fourth, create the implementation plan. Fifth, resolve the compliance variations. Sixth, implement training, transitional processes, and other such activities. (Some of these activities can occur simultaneously with earlier steps.) Seventh, do internal reviews and audits of the new quality system. Eight, prepare for and undergo the on-site compliance audit. ISO 9000 implementation is appropriate even for small businesses, for the standards are generic. The International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 176 soon will issue an ISO 9000 handbook for small and medium-sized businesses.
