Abstract

The differences in concept and application between design for excellence (DFX) and design for Six Sigma (DFSS) are discussed, and it is shown how they can be effectively integrated by using quality function deployment. Quality must be built into a product when it is planned and designed. DFX and DFSS both help at this stage. DFX provides designers with an objective deployment framework and a method to achieve all desirable dimensions of quality. Six Sigma is a quantitative approach to improving product or process quality. QFD deploys quality over design targets and major quality assurance points used throughout the product development process. Its structural integrity when dealing with critical issues of new product development helps position and integrate DFX and DFSS.
