Abstract
In July of 2003 the Phoenix Police Department's Records and Identification Bureau (RIB) became the first law enforcement organization in the U.S. to achieve ISO 9001 registration as a means of reinforcing its reputation as a reliable information provider. Unlike private industry, the RIB serves both internal and external customers who require that information provide be completely accurate. Once ISO 9001 was chosen as a goal, the RIB used process mapping methodology to prepare for registration and identify objectives. Changes made as a result of the mapping have resulted in many positive benefits, including improved communication and greater standardization, efficiency, and job satisfaction.
