Abstract

Together with the growing interest in and use of Six Sigma techniques comes the need to assess the qualifications of those seeking quality leadership roles in organizations. The ASQ certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) exam is a practical and cost effective approach that has gained international recognition. The CSSBB body of knowledge (BOK) is extensive when compared with those of the ASQ certified quality engineer (CQE) and certified quality manager. Differences may be due to Six Sigma's focus on business results and executing individual improvements rather than maintaining a quality system. Individuals wishing to qualify for the exam must provide documentation of experience with Six Sigma projects or significant process improvement. To prepare for the exam, it is helpful to conduct an analysis of the gap between the level of understanding for each item in the CSSBB BOK and one's own familiarity with the material. The CSSBB brochure provides guidance on test preparation and test taking. A sidebar table compares certifications for Certified Quality Manager, CQE, and CSSBB.
