Abstract
The hoshin kanri method and X matrix tool can help organizations develop and deploy strategic plans. The approach is useful to align short- and long-term goals, organize projects by priority and realize organizational vision with the support of informed and focused staff. Adopting the method helped the Danaher Corp. attain record-setting performance and competitive growth. The process is based on long-term thinking to develop a vision, strategy and deployment plan using the plan-do-check-act format to attain balance and focus. Since overall objectives for the short and long term direct activities at all levels, communication from management to midlevel managers and all staff is key. Value stream mapping helps identify breakthrough opportunities to achieve goals. Metrics and resources must be geared to the overall strategy. Once agreed at the top level, strategic planning cascades through management levels and departments. Regular meetings establish expectations, promote stakeholder engagement and maintain accountability.
