Abstract

In May of 2014, a draft version of international standard ISO 9001:2015 ("Quality Management Systems — Requirements") was released. This article discusses fifteen concepts and issues that either spurred development or will drive major change as a result of ISO 9001:2015's release. Summaries of new sections are included, and modernized scope and terminology ared examined. The author emphasizes the degree to which the standard reflects the input of numerous quality management professionals in various industrial sectors, and suggests that changes in ISO 9001:2015 and in the quality management principles of ISO 9000 are an opportunity to revisit organizational areas that have not performed well in the past. A related video interview is available online, in which the author discusses the ISO 9001 revision and key points organizations must consider as the draft international standard version progresses through the development process.
