Excellence Celebrated and Honored by ASQ for Outstanding Contributions and Achievements in Quality

Fourteen Quality Professionals Presented with ASQ Awards & Medals

Milwaukee, Wis., May 12, 2024  — ASQ, the leading association for quality professionals, will host its annual World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI) in Philadelphia May 7-10, 2023. This year’s conference topics will touch on issues facing organizations now and in the coming years. From supply chain and risk management to the future and upskilling, WCQI is the only conference bringing together quality professionals to explore today’s challenges to build a stronger future.

ASQ, the world’s largest network of quality experts and resources, has honored 14 quality professionals with awards and medals to recognize their inventive contributions and accomplishments in the field of quality.

ASQ medals are the highest distinction for service from the Society, and awards recognize individuals for superior achievements in the development, promotion, and communication of quality information and technology.

The honorees were celebrated during ASQ's yearly World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI) in May, taking place in San Diego, California. WCQI 2024 was successful in uniting quality experts from various sectors such as manufacturing, consulting, healthcare, government, education, aerospace, and others. Over the course of more than three days, participants engaged in extensive learning sessions aimed at fostering lasting advancements in their organizations' quality objectives.
ASQ 2024 Award and Medal Winners at WCQI

Wanda Sturm, ASQ Chair, welcomed award and medal winners, their families, and special guests praising recipients for their outstanding contributions. “The ASQ awards recognize not only individual achievements; they also highlight advancement of quality in the world! The recipients are extraordinary in demonstrating leadership in their expertise.”

2024 Awards

Martin A. Brumbaugh Award, for technical articles, presented for co-authoring Predictive ratio CUSUM (PRC): A Bayesian approach in online change point detection of short runs, Journal of Quality Technology, 55:4, 391-403, to:

  • Konstantinos Bourazas (Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece)
  • Frédéric Sobas (Hospices Civils de Lyon, Lyon, France)
  • Panagiotis Tsiamyrtzis (Politecnico di Milano, Milano, Italy)

2024 Medals

  • Crosby Medal, for a distinguished book, presented to Luciana Paulise (Spring, Texas) — For authoring The We Culture, which delves into the power of collaborative leadership and brilliantly explores how fostering a culture of unity and shared purpose can drive organizational success, becoming a must-read for anyone seeking to create a cohesive and high-performing organization.
  • Deming Medal, for statistical thinking & management contribution, presented to Paul Hollingworth (Monmouth, United Kingdom) — For exceptional effectiveness in coaching leaders to adopt Profound Knowledge; steering personal and organizational transformations for 10+ years, to produce lasting outcomes, including individual ownership and Joy in Work
  • Distinguished Service Medal, for lifetime contributions to the quality movement, presented to Robert “QualityBob” Mitchell (Southwest Alliance for Excellence, Phoenix, Arizona) — For dedicated leadership in advancing quality concepts and tools worldwide through the application and extensive training in industry with emphasis on business performance and improvement techniques including ISO, Baldrige, TQM, Lean, and Six Sigma methodologies at all levels; and for his extensive and unselfish leadership within ASQ, serving as Chair at the Division and Section levels within the American Society for Quality, and on Society committees and project teams.
  • Freund-Marquardt Medal, for contributions to quality standards, presented to Susan LK Briggs (SLK Briggs, LLC, Southport, North Carolina) — In recognition of a distinguished career in developing and implementing technical and environmental management standards; for outstanding leadership within the ISO standards community; and for recognition by her peers and clients for significant contributions to improving environmental management processes.
  • Grant Medal, for meritorious educational program, presented to Milton Krivokuca (California State University Dominguez Hills, Carson, California) — For his long-term dedication and leadership in championing a fully accredited and exemplary master’s in a quality degree program designed to prepare quality professionals to apply the tools and methodologies of the quality body of knowledge to achieve performance excellence.
  • Hromi Medal, for contributions to inspection, presented to Kaibo Liu (University of Wisconsin - Madison, Madison, Wisconsin) — For investing in advanced, adaptive inspection and statistical process control for big data streams—innovative methods quickly detect and localize anomalies by inspecting data streams in the spatial domain; for contributions to the body of knowledge with 10 publications, 25+ talks, two courses taught, and leading four projects related to awards, which have led to four best paper/poster awards and six special recognitions.
  • Ishikawa Medal, for human aspects of quality, presented to Husain Ali Al-Omani (AACE International, board of directors, CECO Environmental, General Manager, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia) — For his outstanding contribution in promoting equal access and affordability to CMQ/OE and CSSBB educational resources to emerging Middle Eastern leaders through inclusiveness and being an ASQ Goodwill Ambassador worldwide.
  • Juran Medal, for executive leadership contribution, presented to Tim S. Gitzel (Cameco, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) — For demonstrating breakthrough leadership during a prolonged and challenging energy market crisis that resulted in sustained excellent business performance through people-oriented initiatives and objectives.
  • Lancaster Medal, for international contributions, presented to Jay P. Patel (Quality & Productivity Solutions, Inc., Marlborough, Massachusets) — For distinguished global contributions in quality and productivity, improvement of people, and process and performance over the past 30 years; for promoting quality principles through consulting, training, auditing, and volunteer services to professionals, businesses, and the global community.
  • Shainin Medal, for problem solving methods, presented to Daniel C. Conrad (Hussmann Corporation, Bridgeton, Missouri) — For development of an innovative methodology to embed design for reliability into the culture of the total organization via an integrated approach which focuses the risk mitigation efforts though the Reliability 9-step framework combined with NUDs risk management.
  • Shewhart Medal, for technical or statistical contributions, presented to Peihua Qiu (University of Florida, Gainsville, Florida) — For seminal research in developing new quality control methodologies; for exploring new applications of process control charts; for leadership in promoting quality and statistics in healthcare and biomedical studies; and for outstanding editorial service to ASQ - sponsored journals.
