Professional Experience

Tomas Velasco is an Associate Professor and the Director of the graduate programs in M.S. in Quality Management Engineering and the Ph.D. in Engineering Science with emphasis in Industrial and Quality Engineering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. His research interests and teaching are in the areas of quality, reliability, and applications of artificial intelligence to solve problems in industry. He has been a consultant in the areas of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), continuous improvement, Six Sigma, lean enterprise, and reliability analysis, for several mid-size and large companies in the manufacturing and service sectors. Tomas was awarded The Boeing Co. Welliver Fellowship in 2007, has received the “Outstanding Teacher Award” in the College of Engineering at SIUC in 2016-2017, 2013-2014, 2012-2013, 2005-2006, 2004-2005, 2002-2003, 2001-2002. He has published 24 journal articles, received several grants, and presented at several conferences and meetings.

 

Tomas started his career as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at  Ohio University in Athens, Ohio from 1991-1993. Joined SIUC, Carbondale, IL in 1993 as an Assistant Professor and became an Associate Professor in 1999, has been a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Fachhochschule Deggendorf University in Deggendorf, Germany in the Summer of 2007 and a Visiting Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universidad Carlos III, Madrid, Spain in Summer 2009, 2010, 2011. He has also taught several courses for ASQ in the areas of CSSBB, and CRE.
