Onshoring Circularity: Incentivizing & Scaling Domestic Critical Mineral Supply Chains
John will provide context on the emerging opportunity to enable and unlock remanufacturing at scale across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, highlighting his work leading the Circular Supply Chain Coalition with support from FedEx.
The Problem
81 global conflicts. China controls 95% of all critical mineral refinement and production (directly or indirectly) and has banned some critical mineral exports to the US and has signaled their intent to expand the bans in the future. There is an extremely limited subsidy and incentive policy environment on national and sub-national levels promoting remanufacturing. In the US, the new incoming administration has threatened tariffs against Canada and Mexico, with tariffs on the table across the globe.
With global supply chains already under duress, private sector companies have limited domestic feedstock of vital critical mineralsand other valuable materials in key geographies necessary to achieve sales targets, keep pricing under control, and maintain a competitive advantage.
The Solution - Circular Supply Chain Coalition
The Circular Supply Chain Coalition aims to create & scale regional remanufacturing collection hubs, securing critical mineral feedstock for CSCC partner companies. With a focus on the US, European Union, Canada, Mexico, and Australia markets, the CSCC will engage key stakeholders -including hyper local collectors, regional refurbishers and recyclers, final processors, logistics providers, original manufacturers, policy makers, and community-based organizations- to create a profitable economic platform for companies to leverage in key global markets.
The initial focus will be on consumer electronics, semiconductors and batteries with the intention of engaging all industries in the benefits of remanufacturing. Partners include Climate KIC, FedEx, VCU, Sustain our Future, Metabolic, First Mile, and Circularize.
