University Industry Partnership to Educate Calibration Technicians and Improve Data Quality

Abstract: Engine manufacturer Cummins, Inc. organized a charter to provide training to employees to improve data quality by improving calibration tests for instruments. After one class, however, the effort proved too costly, so Cummins approached the Purdue University College of Technology about adding the class to its curriculum. After approval by the curriculum committee, the class was offered with no prerequisite classes and was also offered as an elective for students seeking the two-year associate of science degree at the college. Using materials and general ideas from Cummins’ offering of the class, the college developed a set of objectives and outcomes, a schedule, and an assessment plan that prepares students for the Certified Calibration Technician exam offered by ASQ. Active laboratory exercises added to the original curriculum enhance student learning. The class has been presented three times, with more than 40 students participating. A sidebar article details class objectives and outcomes for the three-credit-hour class.
