ANSI Response on Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards and in Conformity Assessment Activites 
 

The American National Standards Intstitute (ANSI) has authored a response to a notice from the Office of Management and Budget seeking input on how enhanced guidance on standards and conformity assessment would be of use for federal agencies.

Emphasizing the importance of standards to the U.S. national economy and global competitiveness, ANSI's response calls for continued cooperation between the public and private sectors in the standardization community.

Specific issues addressed in the response include: 

• Accessibility of standards "incorporated by reference" (IBR)
• Copyright protection for standards developers
• Costs and benefits of voluntary standards
• Establishing best practices for using standards in regulation
• Use of multiple standards or conformity assessment procedures in a regulation or procurement situation
