Question of the week:

Q: Is there a guide or list that specifies how long a company must retain records in an ISO 9001:2000 organization?

A: In her book Managing Records for ISO 9000 Compliance, Eugenia K. Brumm writes: "There is no single source that provides an organization with all of the information about retention times for records.”

In other words: Each organization must check the Federal Register, the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), state and municipal laws, and relevant regulatory agencies for the specific regulations that apply.

Additionally, ISO has published the following standards that deal with records-management:

ISO 15489-1:2001
Information and documentation -- Records management -- Part 1: General

ISO/TR 26122:2008
Information and documentation -- Work process analysis for records

ISO 23081-1:2006

Information and documentation -- Records management processes -- Metadata for records -- Part 1: Principles

ISO/TS 23081-2:2007
Information and documentation -- Records management processes -- Metadata for records -- Part 2: Conceptual and implementation issues

ISO 22310:2006
Information and documentation -- Guidelines for standards drafters for stating records management requirements in standards

ISO also featured information on information and documents management in the April 2008 issue of its magazine ISO Focus.
