Ghosts in Your Process? Who Ya Gonna Call?

Abstract:Even when using the DMAIC process, root causes of poorly performing processes can be extremely difficult to find and eliminate. In his book Manufacturing Solutions for Consistent Quality and Reliability, Robert Traver proposes a nine-step process for identifying these "ghosts" that is similar the Six Sigma methodology, but includes a multivariable study that tells where the root causes are located. Finding these key variables at the beginning of the improvement process can provide early breakthroughs. Another difference is the ability of Traver's method to turn critical root causes on and off to confirm that they had been correctly identified.
