AQP Connections
President’s Leadership Award Given to
Powell
When Jennifer Powell was named this year’s
winner of AQP’s prestigious President’s
Leadership Award, she commented, “Working in
this association has been a labor of love. I believe
strongly in its values and mission, so serving in
various leadership positions to help the association
achieve its goals came naturally. Working on the ASQ
affiliation was one of the most challenging and
rewarding leadership experiences of my career. I
consider it a real bonus to have been recognized by
an organization I hold in such high
regard.”
The President’s Leadership Award recognizes
an individual for his/her leadership-oriented
contributions in advancing the field of quality
through participation and the ideals AQP represents.
These contributions must be significant and
recognized on a national level.
A committee composed of past presidents of the
association, board members, staff members, and other
volunteers reviews nominations, which come from the
committee members, as well as from the general
membership. Multiple awards or no awards may be
given, based on the caliber of the nominees. Nominees
do not need to be members of AQP; however, membership
in the association is desirable.
When asked to recount her experience with AQP,
Powell said, “I believe I started my first
officer position around 1988 and have held an office
every year since then. My work with the programs,
nominations, and strategic planning committees were
all multiyear commitments.”
Powell was president of AQP in the years 1990-91
and 2000-02. She also served as secretary and vice
president of the association, as well as a member of
the name change and repositioning committees.
Additionally, she has held numerous local positions,
including Chesapeake chapter president, vice
president, and secretary.
Finkelmeier Receives Judy Gibson Award
At this year’s 25th Annual Conference,
Robert “Bob” Finkelmeier was named
recipient of the Judy Gibson Volunteer Award, which
recognizes individuals for their outstanding
contributions to AQP. Nominees must be national
members of AQP and must have demonstrated outstanding
support for the association through their efforts at
the national or regional levels. Finkelmeier
commented, “To receive the Judy Gibson award is
quite an honor.”
Since the early 1980s, Finkelmeier has been
involved with AQP’s National Team Excellence
Award process as a judge, and he moved into a lead
judge role in the mid-90s. He also is a member of the
team excellence process committee, which oversees the
award competition process and judging
criteria.
In the past four or five years, Finkelmeier has
coordinated and hosted, through his affiliation with
Regis University, the regional Team Excellence
competition in Denver, including providing the
judges’ training and serving as master scorer.
In fact, Finkelmeier also acted as scorekeeper at the
2003 Annual Conference.
Additionally, Finkelmeier has served as one of the
five members of the self-directed vision team of the
Front Range chapter in Denver. He’s been a
reviewer for News for a Change, currently is
book reviewer for AQP, and has published articles in
The Journal for Quality and Participation.
During the past year, Finkelmeier has been a member
of AQP’s vision committee, reviewing drafts and
participating in conference calls.
