The Weyerhaeuser facility, in Cottage Grove, Ore., consists of a sawmill, planer and shipping department. We ship approximately 6.4 million board feet of lumber a week. We strive to achieve high volume, so we can be the low-cost producer, but what really matters to us is that we do it with no accidents or incidents. We also strive to meet 100 percent customer satisfaction and we feel that training is a vital part of our success. In our efforts to continually improve, we are looking at benchmarking companies that share these same values, standards and practices so we can learn from them. We are interested in benchmarking their customer service, safety and delivery standards and training programs. We are looking at all manufacturers, rather than limiting ourselves to just our industry. What advice can you offer to guide us in our benchmarking process: Specifically what are the important things to look for, ideal manufacturers to benchmark and helpful tips to assist us in our benchmarking efforts?
