Statistical Engineering and Tearing Down the Silos of Quality Engineering

Mini Paper from the February 2015 Statistics Digest

by Geoff Vining

This Mini-Paper emphasizes that Statistical Engineering only can succeed if we “blow up the silos” that separate the important quality engineering tools. Only true cross-disciplinary approaches can solve large, unstructured, complex problems, which is the key to the tactical approaches necessary for Statistical Engineering. It is bringing together the various tools in a coherent fashion that we can provide insights to solving classes of problems.

The Web of Statistics

Youden Address

by Lenth, Russell

How statisticians and practitioners approach statistics (and even the very nature of data) has changed considerably over the years, and it will continue to evolve as the nature and type of data change. Moreover, these shifts have required statistical results to be communicated differently. Technology and the Internet are important aspects of all of this. In this article, ``web'' refers more broadly to all of the connections between what we do, how we think about it, the tools we use, and who we serve. The more we understand this web, the better we can do our jobs and prepare for changes in the future. These considerations touch on quality practices (fitness for purpose, per Juran), and statistical engineering (assembling and organizing our tools to suit the purpose).
