Abstract

The Racine Unified School District is one of only a few school districts in the United States to achieve ISO 9001:2000 certification focusing on processes that address both student achievement and operational efficiency. Since implementing its quality management system in 2003, the district has made notable progress in closing the achievement gap between demographic groups in reading and math, improving attendance rates and decreasing truancy and suspensions, and increasing parent satisfaction. Aligning ISO 9001:2000 certification, its Quality District Model, and policy governance has been key to the district’s success.
