Abstract
Since the 1980s, quality methods have been applied to major environmental issues. Today is no different as quality continues to be a major player in helping address issues around sustainability, which can include environmental, social and economic dimensions. To usher sustainability into organizations, quality methods can be applied to improve a specific existing process. Quality methods also can be used to enhance the design and use of new technology to create new processes that use sustainable materials, lower the use of energy or eliminate waste streams. Two international companies, Ashok Leyland and NorDan AB, were recognized recently for their efforts in leveraging quality to simultaneously improve their operations and enhance sustainability.
