Abstract
Depending on the management system standard, some standards are audited by multiple certification agencies under multiple accreditations, while others have multiple certification agencies but a single accreditation agency, for example. Clearly, there are different degrees of centralization that have pluses and minuses. With the growing number of certifications and certification agencies, it has become vital to investigate whether the current system of accreditation is adequate or needs refinement. From the results of a study involving a survey of auditors and management consultants, the authors offer some radical but practical thoughts about the possible centralization of certification and accreditation processes. The study also provides new insights to the managers of certification agencies, accreditation agencies and standards development agencies around the world.
