Abstract

Environmental sustainability is front of mind for this and following generations, having emerged starkly in the foreground in low-lying communities and nations and at other non-flooding sites of manmade natural disasters and heat waves. In the history of quality from the 1960s forward, no challenge has proven insurmountable, given quality professionals engage it. Sustainability, however, has remained on the sidelines in favor of other priorities. Given the entrenched presence of quality principles and strategies worldwide throughout industries in which sustainability efforts would have the greatest impact on humans' quality of life on earth, it's both surprising and perhaps shameful that emphasis remains unapplied on sustainability writ large. Now is the time for quality professionals—consummate problem solvers, after all—to engage this most existential of organizational meta-problems at the level of humanity itself. The key may be to engage the problem on a project by project, and organization by organization, basis.
