Abstract

A focused, targeted approach to sustainability in heavy industry is at the very least a reliable starting point for achieving a demonstrable success on which other sustainability successes might heap. A plant reliability engineer, for example, can do the usual jobs associated with the title and show that, in the course of addressing parasitic frictional loss, fugitive emission loss, and electrical heating loss, major overall reductions in greenhouse gas emissions naturally result. For example across many heavy industries, energy consumption is inherently inefficient according to the Department of Energy, so conditions are ripe for exploitation at the hands of quality professionals interested in sustainability gains.
