Abstract

When studying or researching a population, it is critical to determine the appropriate sample size. It affects the precision of estimates and the power of the study to be able to draw valid conclusions. If the sample size is too small, it could produce inconclusive results. If the sample size is too big, it will waste time and resources. Several techniques can be used to determine sample size. In many instances, the known characteristics of a population provide some guidance as to the appropriate method to use. In situations in which only the population size is known, Yamane’s formula can be used to estimate an appropriate sample size.
