For Immediate Release

Scholarship awarded to Georgia Tech student for academic achievements, research of challenging, impactful topic

Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 3, 2013 — ASQ has awarded its Richard A. Freund International Scholarship to Kaibo Liu, a Georgia Institute of Technology student earning a doctoral degree in industrial engineering.

Liu, of China, was awarded the $5,000 scholarship, which is named after a past ASQ president and supports a quality professional’s graduate studies.

“Kaibo Liu stood out among the candidates with his impressive academic achievements and ambitions to conduct innovative research that will benefit the quality community,” said Chuck Aubrey, Freund Scholarship chair and ASQ past chair. “In addition, we were impressed with Kaibo’s determination to research, as part of his doctoral studies, data fusion for quality control and system improvements — a challenging topic that can have a positive impact on the quality discipline.”

Aside from his studies, Liu is an accomplished author, having won awards from the Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference and from the quality, statistics and reliability section of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences — or INFORMS. He also is dedicated to teaching, and in 2011 won the outstanding teacher assistant finalist award at Georgia Tech.

“My career goal is to become an active, leading researcher in the data fusion field for quality control and system improvements,” Liu said. “I have prepared to fully devote myself to conducting innovative research and teaching. The recognition and support of the Richard A. Freund Scholarship will help in achieving this goal.”
