Building Performance Excellence Using the National Quality Award Framework
Abstract: In January, 2011, the California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) was awarded the Prospector Award from the California Award for Performance Excellence -- the state Baldrige Award. The award was given in recognition of its broad use of systems management and continuous process improvement, and its corresponding broad-scale improvements in business results. This webinar will be presented by Dr. Denzil Verardo, special assistant to the department director to outline its efforts to build performance excellence.
Among other improvements the department has seen a high level of elimination of waste threat and clean closure of toxic sites, increasing revenue streams through regulated community abatements, and improving employee morale. This webinar will highlight the Baldrige framework as a tool of organizational improvement, and next steps in the department’s journey.
PRESENTER: Verardo currently serves on the California Senate Advisory Commission on Cost Control in State Government and is a past recipient of the Excellence in Government Leadership Award. Verardo was best known for his service as chief deputy director for administration for the California Department of Parks and Recreation, when that department won a California Award for Performance Excellence (the state Baldrige Award). The DTSC exists to protect California against threats to public health and degradation of the environment through regulation of hazardous waste, cleanup of existing contamination, pollution prevention and reduction in hazardous waste and toxic materials, and identification of potential new pollutants.
