Interdisciplinary Lesson Study: Building Graph Interpretation, Web Evaluation Skills and Enthusiasm
Abstract: This is a conference paper for the Education Division's 2011 ASQ Advancing the STEM Agenda in Education, the Workplace and Society Conference. This paper on using instruction to increase interest in the STEM fields was authored by Maleka Hashmi, Amanda Little and Jennifer Grant of the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
The authors describe the paper with this abstract:We used the high quality process of lesson study to develop, evaluate, and revise an interdisciplinary non-majors biology lesson that teaches graph interpretation, critical analysis of internet information, and neurotransmitter action using a case study to compare different plantderived compounds for treating depression. The lesson made coursework relevant to students,and stimulated student interest in biology. Lesson study observations revealed student group dynamics and provided us with ideas for quality improvement.
