Why the Liberal Arts and Sciences Still Matter
Abstract: It has always been the particular challenge of liberal arts and sciences programs to answer the question, “But what can you do with it?” The question has become increasingly pointed in a troubled economy, especially as college costs continue to rise and presidential administrations call upon a more broadly educated—namely technically trained—workforce. The article explores not only why the liberal arts and sciences still matter, but why they may be more important than ever, especially in light of the findings in the recently published report, “Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses.”
