Expanding the Scope of Management Systems Auditing Standards

World Conference on Quality and Improvement vol. 61 - May 2007

Abstract: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and its Technical Committees (TC) 176 and 207 on quality management and environmental management, respectively, have made considerable progress in aligning the requirements and the language used in ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004. An American standard, ANSI/ISO/ASQ QI 19011S-2004, has been developed to provide supplemental guidance to the ISO standard. Since then, the U.S. has recognized that the management systems auditing guidance in this standard could be readily applied to other management system standards. ISO also appears to be considering a more general approach to management systems auditing. The focus of this paper is the U.S. approach to expanding the scope of the auditing standards to encompass broader application of auditing principles and practices.
