Michael R. Whisman
Mr. Whisman, Director, Quality, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Texas A&M University System, a Masters in Business Administration from Pepperdine University, and a Certificate in Materials Management from Bloomfield College. He has also taken well over four hundred hours of Continuing Educational Units in leadership, team building, human resources, total quality, manufacturing, six-sigma, and materials management. In 1995 he completed a "Train the Trainer Course in Performance Management" from the Aubrey Daniels School. His business experience covers a broad range of administrative, quality, and manufacturing systems within the medical device manufacturing industry. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality.
He has over 30 years management experience in both the public and private sectors, including military and civilian payroll administration, cash disbursement, customer service operations, production, industrial engineering, materials, plant management, supplier quality, Total Quality Management (TQM), and use of the Malcolm Baldrige Model for Achieving Business Excellence.
Mike served on the 1998 President's Quality Award Board of Examiners and the 1997 through 2003 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Examiners, serving as a Senior Examiner from 2000 - 2002, and an Alumni Examiner for 2003, 2005, and 2006. He has also served on the 1996, 1997, and 1998 National Excellence in Service Quality Award Board of Examiners for Non-Profit Organizations and coaches the United Way of Lake County. Mike has served as a member of the Baxter Award for Operational Excellence (BAOE) Board of Examiners since 1991, eleven years as Senior Examiner, having led eighteen site visits.
He has coached over 22 recipients of the Baxter Quality Award, assisted in 51 Baldrige-based applications, including leading two applications for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award to the 2nd stage of that process, both times scoring in the 600 - 750 range. He was an instructor for the Baxter Award for Operational Excellence Examiner Course and the Baxter Quality Institute and served on the BAOE Planning Committee from 1995 to 2002. In 1996 and 1997 served on both the Baxter Supplier Quality Improvement Steering Team and the Supplier Measurement Team. In 1998 he was recognized as a "Baxter Quality Professional".
Mike completed Baxter's first Six Sigma Black Belt training program in 2002, taught by the George Group, and currently serves as a Master Blackbelt in leading projects, coaching Green and Black Belts, plus facilitating value stream mapping and business alignment sessions for Baxter leaders. In his role as Director of Quality, he supports the ongoing deployment of Lean Sigma and continuous improvement approaches throughout the corporation. This has included the production of five annual Quality Leadership Conferences and three annual team competitions to promote and recognize the use of quality improvement tools throughout Baxter.
For the past five years, Mike has served as a Judge for the ASQ International Team Competition and currently serves as an Examiner for the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing.
Mike and his wife, Gay, have been together for over 37 years with two adult children, Michael and Laura. Another daughter was gained in 2002 when Tracy married Michael. Two cats, Hiccup and Gremlin, round out the Whisman family.
Mike and Gay enjoy sports such as tennis, golf, bowling, and biking, as well as movies and the theatre. Gay is a Human Resources Professional and is currently retired so she can travel with Mike on most of his business trips.
