Question As a quality consultant specializing in education, I have become somewhat disheartened by the appalling lack of interest by educators at large in using the Baldrige criteria for improvement. This is more surprising to me when one considers the federal governments Goals 2000 initiative which mandates educational institutions adopt process or performance improvement measures like the Baldrige (in order to receive funding). Even though the Baldrige National Quality Award office actively supports the establishment of such practices in education, so far the interest appears minimal; many seem only willing to use the criteria for recognition instead of for serious system change. What is it going to take for these educational institutions to adopt Baldrige practices or even simply to benchmark? Don Thomasino |
