Continuous Process Improvement in Healthcare

2010 Institute for Continual Quality Improvement Presentation

by Ronald J. M. M. Does, University of Amsterdam

Perhaps the first connotation with the topic of healthcare improvement is innovation in medical science. This session, however, focuses on the improvement of healthcare by improving its delivery. This concerns the operating routines in hospitals, including primary patient, medical support, and non-medical support processes. The lecture also includes a description of generic improvement projects in healthcare with some real-life examples which show how continuous improvement can be achieved.

Quality Engineering Your Christmas Tree

by Roeder, Ken PhD., Forest Geneticist, North Carolina Division of Forest Resources;

Christmas trees are used as a case study to highlight quality applications in a non-manufacturing industry. Genetics is one of the latest tools being applied to improve the average quality level of tree crops. Tree improvement through selective breeding is heavily reliant on design of experiments (DOE) and statistical data analysis. The multi-year time frame required for tree crop growth requires long-term planning of longitudinal studies, sequential experimentation, and up-front identification of other factors for inclusion in these designs. Extensive work has been done by the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources to improve the trees grown and sold for wood products and for the Christmas tree market in particular. Experimental design considerations must take the underlying genetics into account, as well as balance complex logistical and feasibility issues associated with field testing. Statistical data analysis is critical in quantifying differences and interpreting results so th

International Statistical Standards: A Guide for the Uninitiated

by Johnson, Mark E.;

International statistical standards provide an abundance of tools for potential use by practitioners. The collection of these standards can be thought of as constituting a toolbox including a variety of statistical methodologies. These documents can be extraordinarily helpful, if one or more of them match the problem at hand. For applications involving commerce with countries belonging to the ISO community, the use of an international standard provides immediate credibility—particularly with in the areas of acceptance sampling and measurement method accuracy. Munitions, food quality control, and inter-laboratory testing are some areas for which statistical standards have played an important role. However, international statistical standards are not a panacea, as the range of topics covered is limited to material covered in sixty-eight published documents (as of 17 August 2010). There is a loyal users community for international statistical standards but the statistical profession as
