A Call to Action Winter 2001 Youden Address
Abstract: The field of industrial statistics has failed to attain the recognition it deserves. The latter is evidenced by the proliferation of consultants that don’t understand the statistical aspects and often propose superficial short term fixes to business problems. However, a profound change in both academia and industry that would elicit a strong cooperation between these two entities would substantially improve the position of statistics and the role it plays in industry. Industry could provide more funding to universities. In return, academics would strive to do research in statistical applications that would directly impact industry. In this way a symbiotic relationship can start. Nevertheless, this state could only be achieved if both academic and industrial statisticians rally top decision makers, specifically vice-presidents, CEO’s, provosts and deans, and lead them into making the changes.
