The Web of Statistics Youden Address
Abstract: How statisticians and practitioners approach statistics (and even the very nature of data) has changed considerably over the years, and it will continue to evolve as the nature and type of data change. Moreover, these shifts have required statistical results to be communicated differently. Technology and the Internet are important aspects of all of this. In this article, ``web'' refers more broadly to all of the connections between what we do, how we think about it, the tools we use, and who we serve. The more we understand this web, the better we can do our jobs and prepare for changes in the future. These considerations touch on quality practices (fitness for purpose, per Juran), and statistical engineering (assembling and organizing our tools to suit the purpose).
