Contexts of Statistical Practice Winter 1998 Youden Address
Abstract: There may have been little focus on application of quality concepts to statistical practice. Statisticians can be seen as provides of products and services to customers: products include publications on theory and methods and serves include the teaching of statistics and consultation to clients. Lessons of the quality movement may therefore be applied to statistical practice, just as they may be applied to any other business activity. No attempt will be made here to discuss the broad spectrum of principles and lessons about quality improvement. Three themes will be reviewed: the systems view, the need for and ways to develop customer knowledge, and the use of a cycle of systematic learning and action for improvement.
