Accelerating Innovation in Industrial Statistics – Mini Paper Appearing in Winter 2002 Newsletter

Abstract: Our industries suffer when industrial statisticians are not using the latest statistical techniques. Moreover, some outdated or even incorrect ideas persist in the current practice of industrial statistics. Explanations for this phenomenon include corporations impeding innovation through excessive bureaucracy, inflexible automation systems, or an organizational culture that resists change. Also, many of the articles found on the literature are too theoretical to be applied in industry. Closer interaction between industrial and academic statisticians is a solution to this problem. The paper proposes approaches for forming beneficial partnerships. Industrial statisticians should become familiar with publications such as Technometrics and the Journal of Quality Technology. Academic statisticians should make their work more visible on the internet, and try to provide solutions packages with software and training materials to accommodate the needs of their industrial colleagues. Both parties would benefit from this relationship.
