CHAIR’S MESSAGE

A Message From the Chair
I would like to start the new year by expressing my gratitude to the many people who have volunteered their time and talent to the Software Division. Our division is also supported by many dedicated people at ASQ Headquarters and I would also like to thank them. The Software Division Strategic Planning Committee is working to set our future direction. If you have any suggestions on how we can serve you better, please let us know. If you are interested in volunteering to help the Software Division, let us know as we are always looking for new volunteers. You can e-mail the Software Division at swd@asq.org.

I would like to close by wishing everyone a prosperous and healthy New Year.

Doug Hamilton, Chair

CERTIFICATION

Why Should I Become Certified?
By Robin Dudash, ASQ Pittsburgh Education Chair
As a quality professional, you worked hard to get your undergraduate degree, or you may have received your degree from the ‘hard-knocks university’. Some of us may have even gone on to complete a master’s degree. So you may have asked yourself as I did, “Why should I become certified?”

Leadership Transition
by Alex Hilgendorf

The Software Division has sponsored the Certified Software Quality Engineer (ASQ CSQE) exam since 1996. Leadership for the exam was provided primarily by Linda Westfall and Doug Hamilton. As is the case for each of ASQ’s exams, there is and has been a designated chair for the exam. The CSQE exam chair is appointed by the ASQ Certification Board chair and is responsible for recruiting subcommittee members who help with the exam process as well as workshop recruiting. Via the exam chair, each exam has representation on the Certification Board. The certification board is responsible for promoting exams as well as for maintaining process consistency across ASQ’s 14 certifications.

Prior to June 2004 I had served as a workshop recruiter for Doug Hamilton who was the exam chair at the time. At that time I took over the CSQE exam chair position while Doug became involved in the Software Division. Typically the exam chair rotates every two years. Now, because of the changing needs of the division, I am stepping into the role of vice chair technology on the Software Division Council, while Kathi Harris is taking over the role of CSQE exam chair. Kathi has been involved with the exam nearly since it was first offered and has proved her passion and skill by participating in countless workshops. The certification board is already familiar with Kathi as has she serves as the chair for the Quality Improvement Associate certification (ASQ CQIA). The Software Division Council and Certification Board look forward to her fresh perspective on the CSQE.

Finally, I would like to thank the Software Division Council for giving me the opportunity to serve as exam chair and I look forward to contributing as vice chair technology!

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Future Needs
To support the creation and maintenance of certification tests, ASQ hosts several workshops each year. Participants in the workshops offer their expertise for two days in exchange for travel, lodging, and food expenses as well as two certification credits per workshop. Workshops types include BOK updates (once each five years), exam reviews (two per year), item writing and/or item review workshops (as needed). Workshop committees consist of about a dozen CSQE certified people. To maintain the integrity of the test material we try to include about six people who have never attended that particular type of workshop. The next workshop will be next fall. If you are interested in attending, then please contact Mary Martin, mmartin@asq.org. Those participating in these workshops are not eligible to teach CSQE refresher courses for two years. What are your needs? Send an email to swd@asq.org.

AEROSPACE CORNER

by W. L. "Bill" Trest

The great elephant in the aerospace software room continues to be the ethereal 'specter' of military/federal specifications and standards. On the other hand, such lingering specters are not always unsettling. Regardless of various changes brought about by Acquisition Reforms, etc., that have reduced or eliminated many but not all contractually defined methods and models for software development, the aerospace industry appears to be proposing “needs-appropriate” contracting with "world class" quality systems and processes for software development.
