Alex Garcia, an ASQ member for close to 28 years, is a Master Black Belt at Flowserve Corp. in Irving, TX. Garcia, who earned a master’s degree, recently answered questions about the importance of Six Sigma.


What do you think is most important in implementing a Six Sigma project?
Having a properly defined project and a scope improvement project. It would move mountains!

Why do you think Six Sigma is important?
Because 6S is the most realistic key measurement of any business process performance, and it will empower you to define, measure, analyze, improve and control it successfully.

Why do you think quality is important?
Because quality is the key independent variable, it’s the cause and the driver of business profitability.

What’s your favorite benefit of quality?
It gives you the insight and skill to improve processes that lead your company to a higher level of competitive edge.

Why did you choose to go into the quality field?
After a corporate 18 months of rotating training in all key departments, I discovered quality is the driver to any business success and market value added position.

What’s your best advice to someone new to quality?
Learn, understand and apply the teachings of all the quality gurus, especially W. Edwards Deming.
