DISCRIPTION: Most commercial enterprises want some meaningful but simple metrics to measure,
track and report their part and/or product reliability, which link well to their business and/or engineering
 processes. An internal reliability measurement may sometimes be "defined" for that purposes.
However, without careful consideration initially, the adopted non-conventional reliability metric may be
lack of scientific sense, causing a lot of confusion and misunderstanding in calculation,
reporting and communication. This talk presents you a real case study, which turns out to be a good
example of lesson learned.


PRESENTER: Dr. Wendai Wang has more than 20 years industry and research experience in reliability engineering and reliability management. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Shanghai Jiaotong University and his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He is currently a senior reliability manager at GreenVolts Inc., an integrated system developer of scalable, reliable, high performance Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) solutions. Prior to joining GreenVolts, he was a senior reliability engineering manager and a senior member of technical staff at the Applied Materials and, before that, a technical leader at GE Energy and GE Corporate R&D Center, and, before that, a reliability specialist in Honeywell International. He has successfully initiated, developed, implemented and practiced Design-for-Reliability (DfR) methodologies, tools and processes in General Electric Corporation and Applied Materials Corporation. He has led many innovative design-for-reliability (DFR) projects. He is the author of over 30 publications and invited speeches, and is a major contributor to IEEE Color books and four industry-leading reliability software packages. He was honored an America’s Outstanding Professional in Years 2003 and 2004. He was the recipient of the 2005 Stan Ofsthun Award and the 2008 Applied Materials’ Quality Award. He was invited to give a speech “营造品牌的力量” at The 11th Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology (11届中国留学人员广州科技交流会). His work and research area include DFR methodology and process, reliability planning, reliability testing, supplier quality and reliability, reliability assessment and qualification, system reliability and availability modeling and analysis, mechanical and electronics reliability, and reliability training. He has been a program vice chairman of the RAMS® (AIAA, ASQ, IEEE, IEST, IIE, SAE, SOLE, SRE and SSS) for many years and currently is also the vice president of Society of Reliability Engineers (SRE) Silicon Valley Chapter.
